Energy consumption in plastic industry - review of studies developed
The level of energy consumption for the production of plastics is a variable that in recent years has gained great importance due to its environmental impact on energy rational use, and its representative cost for production. This paper contains a brief explanation of the importance of quantifying the energy consumption required for the production of plastic parts, as well as how to measure variables such as consumption fixed and variable, and determine the specific energy consumption for processing plants, for processes and equipment. Subsequently, it describes several studies about energy consumption rates relevant to the plastics industry in Colombia and different countries that count large polymer processing plants. This paper is made in order to provide a basic reference material to researchers interested in this topic
Synthesis and size evolution of 1D hydroxyapatite crystals under surfactant-free hydrothermal conditions
Hydroxyapatite nanoparticulate materials have received a great deal of scientific
attention due to their dental and orthopedic applications but simple strategies to control particle
characteristics (e.g., surface area, shape and size distribution) are still needed. Among several
hydroxyapatite structures, one-dimensional nanoscale materials such as nanowires, nanorods and
nanobelts can be synthesized in the presence of specific surfactants added during synthesis in
order to alter the particle growth. This contribution is aim to explore strategies to obtain one
dimensional hydroxyapatite crystals without the use of surfactants. Particularly, we study the
effect of several variables such as temperature, reaction time and pH on shape and size of
hydroxyapatite crystals produced under hydrothermal conditions. The results obtained show the
formation of hydroxyapatite nanorods as well as some interesting insights about how to control
particle sizes in samples obtained at temperatures between 180 °C and 220 °C. These results
have potential benefits at the time of producing one dimensional hydroxyapatite crystals in a
simple and not expensive way

PregradoMedic
Consecutive renal biopsy in a cohort of patients with lupus nephritis of the Colombian Caribbean
Background: Renal biopsy is the gold standard for the diagnosis and classification of lupus
nephritis (LN). However, a consecutive biopsy can predict the clinical course and optimize
the therapeutic strategies.
Objectives: To compare the histopathological findings with clinical responses.
Patients and Methods: Thirty patients with active LN were included. Renal biopsies were
performed at the time of diagnosis and subsequently under clinical criteria according to
consensus of Spanish Society of Nephrology. The response to treatment was defined as
complete response, partial responder or non-responder. The histological change in second
biopsy towards LN classes I, II or III/IV-C was defined as histological response (HR).
Results: In initial renal biopsy, 28 (93%) patients showed proliferative LN; III-A or A/C
(n; 7), IV-A or A/C (n: 19) and mixed; III+IV/V (n; 2). LN class V was presented in two
cases. The clinical response was; complete response (10%), partial response (20%), and
non-response (70%). HR was manifested in 37% and non-histologic response in 63% of
patients. Around 33% of patients with complete response/partial response showed active
lesions in the consecutive renal biopsy.
Conclusions: In Colombian Caribbean, LN is aggressive and refractory to treatment. The
consecutive renal biopsy allowed to demonstrate the persistence of the activity of the
lesion in almost half of the patients, which may provide additional information to create
better response criteria. The consecutive renal biopsy is a tool that allows improving the
evaluation of the response to treatment in the LN
Principales medidas de profilaxis en endoscopia bariátrica. Guía Española de Recomendación de Expertos
Bariatric endoscopy (BE) encompasses a number of techniques -some consolidated, some under development- aiming to contribute to the management of obese patients and their associated metabolic diseases as a complement to dietary and lifestyle changes. To date different intragastric balloon models, suture systems, aspiration methods, substance injections and both gastric and duodenal malabsorptive devices have been developed, as well as endoscopic procedures for the revision of bariatric surgery. Their ongoing evolution conditions a gradual increase in the quantity and quality of scientific evidence about their effectiveness and safety. Despite this, scientific evidence remains inadequate to establish strong grades of recommendation allowing a unified perspective on prophylaxis in BE. This dearth of data conditions leads, in daily practice, to frequently extrapolate the measures that are used in bariatric surgery (BS) and/or in general therapeutic endoscopy. In this respect, this special article is intended to reach a consensus on the most common prophylactic measures we should apply in BE. The methodological design of this document was developed while attempting to comply with the following 5 phases: Phase 1: delimitation and scope of objectives, according to the GRADE Clinical Guidelines. Phase 2: setup of the Clinical Guide-developing Group: national experts, members of the Grupo Español de Endoscopia Bariátrica (GETTEMO, SEED), SEPD, and SECO, selecting 2 authors for each section. Phase 3: clinical question form (PICO): patients, intervention, comparison, outcomes. Phase 4: literature assessment and synthesis. Search for evidence and elaboration of recommendations. Based on the Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine classification, most evidence in this article will correspond to level 5 (expert opinions without explicit critical appraisal) and grade of recommendation C (favorable yet inconclusive recommendation) or D (inconclusive or inconsistent studies). Phase 5: External review by experts. We hope that these basic preventive measures will be of interest for daily practice, and may help prevent medical and/or legal conflicts for the benefit of patients, physicians, and BE in general
